Ioannis Chatiris, owner of Ethos in Midtown East and a previous partner at Kyma in Roslyn, New York, has taken over the former space of Charlie Palmer Steak NYC at 5 East 54th Street. In a post on Instagram this week, the restaurant announced it will be officially leaving its longtime home on Elizabeth Street on May 16. “The larger space was unsustainable,” Leo told the Post in April. ![]() Jing Fong, which also has a second location on the Upper West Side, offered takeout, delivery, and outdoor dining throughout the pandemic, but it wasn’t enough to make rent on the restaurant’s sprawling 800-person dining room, reportedly one of the largest in Chinatown. News of the new location comes just under three months after the celebrated Chinatown restaurant announced the permanent closure of its indoor dining room. Executive chef Jin Ruan will continue on at the new restaurant, as well. The new restaurant is substantially smaller than its previous home on Elizabeth Street, marketing director Claudia Leo tells Eater, but owner Truman Lam is apparently working with an architect to recreate the ambiance of its sprawling dining room at the new 125-seat location. Jing Fong, which previously announced it would be reopening at a new location this summer, has confirmed that it’s staying in the neighborhood, though its address is still unknown. The little kids in their perfect little dresses and suits were adorable. From either end of the room, we could hear music and MC's excitedly making announcements, and laughter and fun. I don't know if that's standard or not, but the menu was huge.) Soon the other guests left for their respective weddings, and we kind of had the place to ourselves. ![]() It looked like every table was full, but they found us a spot and we ordered a montain of dim sum. The main dining room is huge, 120 tables, with 2 other large rooms on either end, separated from the main room. There were 2 weddings going on that night. The restaurant is up a long escalator from the ground floor. When we said we had called ahead, she got on her walkie-talkie and called upstairs. When we arrived, the young woman by the door was turning people away because they had 2 private parties. We had called ahead to be sure we could get in, and were told to come after 6:30. It was Christmas night, so where would you go in NY, but to a Chinese restaurant? Jing Fong is famous for it's all day dim sum, which sounded perfect.
